It has been analyzed that Samsung Electronics’ equity investment in Sharp is to secure the oxide TFT technology for large OLED panels and advance the mass production of next-generation OLED TVs rather than for a smooth supply of LCD panels used in large-screen TV sets. Sharp is currently leading the development of oxide TFT technology with its own techniques.
David Hsieh, vice president of the Greater China Market at market research firm DisplaySearch, posted an article on his company blog on March 6, reading, “There is some possibility that Samsung will make use of Sharp’s oxide TFT technology to work on new OLED TV sets.” He continued, “Samsung is currently intending to decrease its investment in its own LCD panel production facilities in China and it is likely to put more focus on OLED TV products than LCD panel capacity expansion.”
