An Employer of More Than 43,000 People
Coupang has become one of Korea's three biggest employers.
Coupang and Coupang Fulfillment Service which operates logistics centers, employed a combined total of 43,171 people as of the end of the third quarter, CEO Score said in a report on Nov. 17. CEO Score calculated the figure based on the number of subscribers to the National Pension Service.
Coupang ranked third after Samsung Electronics (104,723) and Hyundai Motor (68,242). Coupang’s employment size exceeded that of LG Electronics (40,500) and SK Hynix (28,129). Coupang ranked fourth until the second quarter, but rose to third place in the third quarter, beating LG Electronics.
Coupang made an aggressive move towards creating jobs in 2020. Coupang created 13,744 new jobs from February to September in 2020. The figure dwarfed the number of new jobs created by second-ranked Hanwha Solution (3,025) and third-ranked Samsung Electronics (2,895). This is in contrast to a decrease of 1,833 jobs at the nation's top 500 companies during the period.
