Use of Big Data

It has been found that 81.6 percent of Korean enterprises are not using big data, and Korea is lagging behind advanced countries by at least two years in the technological strength associated with big data.

On July 15, the Korea Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI) announced the result of its recent survey concerning big data utilization. Only 7.5 percent or 10.9 percent of the 500 respondents answered that they were using big data and planning to do so in the near future, respectively.

Of the positive respondents, 47.3 percent said that they employed big data for marketing purposes, and 41.9 percent for management purposes. 24.7 percent and 20.4 percent each mentioned strategic planning and R&D.

Korea is falling behind global big data leaders by two to four years when it comes to technological strength, too. According to the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), the gap was equivalent to two years in big data collection and management, three to four years in arithmetic and logical processing, and at least two years in analysis as of the end of 2013.

“The domestic big data market may be dominated by foreign companies,” said the KCCI, suggesting the five policy keywords of SPEED for the promotion of the big data industry. SPEED stands for Share public data, Promote small and medium enterprises, Educate to train experts, Endeavor to generate demand, and Deregulate.

“The government needs to step in for better utilization of big data and the growth of the big data industry,” the KCCI explained, continuing, “Still, discussions on how to protect personal information should come first during the course.”
