Market research firm Omdia said on Nov. 6 that both Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are preparing to release mini-LED TVs next year.

The mini-LED TV market is expected to substantially expand next year. According to the firm, the global shipments are estimated to increase 62 percent to 10.3 million units in 2021.

In a mini-LED TV, LEDs with a size of 100 to 200 micrometers are densely arranged on a backlight unit as a light source. Those are different from micro-LEDs in that those emit no light on their own. The dense arrangement leads to a brighter and clearer display and a higher price compared to LCD TVs.

According to those in the industry, mini-LED is a kind of transition stage between LCD and next-generation display. At present, the LCD TV market remains stagnant and next-generation TVs are yet to become commercially available due to technological and price factors. Omdia said that the global LCD TV shipments would slightly fall to 219,917,000 units next year.

Under the circumstances, TV manufacturers are offering mini-LED TVs as their alternative to LCD TVs. Chinese companies, including TCL, already released mini-LED TVs this year. The South Korean companies are likely to launch premium mini-LED TVs based on their advanced technology.
