Samsung AI Forum 2020 Held Nov. 2-3

Samsung Electronics is actively investing in artificial intelligence (AI), which is considered a big future growth engine item. Analysts say that Samsung vice chairman Lee Jae-yong is leading the way to ensure that the company secures  leadership in developing technologies based on AI.

Samsung Electronics held the Samsung AI Forum 2020 on Nov. 2. In the forum, the Korean tech giant discussed the applications of AI technology to solving global problems such as climate change and pandemics.

In particular, this year, Samsung Electronics set up the Samsung AI Researcher of the Year program to discover outstanding new researchers in the AI field.

"Samsung Electronics is a key technology leader in the AI ecosystem, and we are actively cooperating with researchers around the world to find the right solutions," said Kim Ki-nam, vice chairman of Samsung Electronics in charge of the DS Division, in an opening speech.

Samsung Electronics is enjoying tangible results in the AI sector as well. OxFirst, a British consulting firm, announmced that Samsung Electronics which has the largest number of patents on AI in the world applied for the registration of 5,073 patents. OxFirst cited Samsung, IBM and Tencent as the "most important AI patent holders" and explained that Samsung was leading the AI market with more than 5,000 patents worldwide.

Moreover, Samsung Electronics has continued to make aggressive investments in the AI field such as acquiring Viv Labs, a Silicon Valley-based AI platform development company, in November 2016.
