The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy has started the construction of a by-product hydrogen supply center in the vicinity of Hyundai Steel’s plant located in Dangjin, South Chungcheong Province.

The construction project is to popularize the use of hydrogen for industrial and economic purposes based on public-private cooperation and the establishment of a national hydrogen economy network. The center is scheduled to open early next year for a hydrogen supply of up to 2,000 tons, which can cover 13,000 hydrogen vehicles a year.

The price of the hydrogen supplied via the center is planned to be at least 20 percent lower than the current price. At present, the price of hydrogen supplied to hydrogen charging stations is slightly over 7,000 won per kilogram. The center will store hydrogen produced by Hyundai Steel and the hydrogen will be loaded into hydrogen tube trailers at a high pressure of 200 bar.

Before the groundbreaking ceremony held on Oct. 12, Korea Gas Corp., which will be in charge of the distribution of the hydrogen, signed a memorandum of understanding for better automotive hydrogen distribution with the five companies of Hyundai Steel, Hyundai Glovis, Hynet, SPG Hydrogen and Hyundai Motor Co. The companies will be respectively responsible for hydrogen production, hydrogen transport, charging station supply, hydrogen distribution consulting and hydrogen vehicle development and popularization in their collaboration with the corporation.
