An Achievement of Green Balance Strategy

An SK Innovation researcher shows solvents produced from waste plastic.

SK Innovation has recently succeeded in producing chemical prototypes with pyrolytic oil obtained by high-temperature waste plastic decomposition. This achievement is based on SK Group’s Green Balance Strategy to better fulfill its environmental, social and governance (ESG) responsibilities.

The prototypes consist of solvents and lubricant base oils. In producing the prototype products, the company significantly reduced the impurities of the pyrolytic oil by utilizing its accumulated know-how and R&D expertise in petrochemical product handling.

The solvents are higher in paraffin content and smell less than existing products. In addition, the base oils are suitable for producing the finest base oils. Solvents are used for various applications, ranging from washing and paint dilution to chemical processes. Lubricant base oils determine the qualities of lubricants such as engine oil.

At present, SK Group is beefing up the environmental side of its business to create more ESG values. SK Group chairman Chey Tae-won recently sent an e-mail to every employee to emphasize the importance of ESG responsibilities.
