SK Engineering & Construction is absorbed in eco-friendly social contribution activities, whilst continuing to obtain better than expected results in diverse areas of the global construction market.

SK Engineering & Construction (SK E&C) announced that it held an inauguration ceremony for the remodeled Myoung Ryun Orphanage in Chunggye-dong, Euiwang City, Gyunggi Province on November 29. SK E&C changed the decrepit orphanage into a state-of-the-art energy saving building through remodeling construction involving more than twenty eco-friendly energy technologies. The project took five months and cost 500 million won in total, including 200 million won for investment in eco-friendliness and energy saving.

Agrees to donate eco-friendly social welfare facilities

Shin Dong-woong, Chief of the Energy Cooperation Center at Korea Energy Management Corporation (KEMCO), and Oh Jin-won, Chief of the Housing & Building Division of SK E&C, attended the inauguration. “SK E&C and KEMCO agreed to donate eco-friendly social welfare facilities last year,” an SK official said, adding, “Having heard that the Myoung Ryun Orphanage building was around 26 years old and in such a bad condition that it was affecting the lives of more than 50 orphans, we decided to remodel the building.”

SK E&C carefully applied twenty core eco-friendly energy saving technologies to every part of the building, from the basement to the rooftop. The Myoung Ryun Orphage building is now classed as a 2-liter house, the most energy-efficient in South Korea, with its entire energy use decreasing 94.3% because of the remodeling. It means that its annual energy use per unit area (m2) is no more than 2 liters of Kerosene eight times lower than that of general housing facilities. The remodeling will enable the Myoung Ryun Orphanage to save 6.8 million won in energy costs annually. SK E&C explained that, since the money can only be used for the orphans, a “donation” effect has been created.

SK Chemical Eco Lab, constructed by SK E&C, was recently certified by Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) in the US as the highest class with the highest grade in Korea, thus leading the industry in eco-friendly building construction. Park Hyun-geun, Chief of the Building Technology Center at SK Engineering & Construction, said, “We at SK E&C will continue to cultivate a corporate culture that creates sustainable happiness by utilizing cutting-edge environmental energy technologies, such as the remodeling of the Myoung Ryun Orphanage building.

2011, the best year ever

SK E&C saw a banner year in its history, achieving higher than expected results in various areas of the global construction market and succeeding in pioneering new markets. The amount of contracts won overseas this year alone surpasses US$3.7 billion (approximately 4.18 trillion won) as of the end of November. The company expects the all-time high of US$3.9 billion in 2009 can be broken. Strong in the plant market, the company obtained an order for the Wasit gas plant project worth US$1.9 billion (approximately 2.14 trillion won) in Saudi Arabia in February. SK E&C will be involved in three construction works gas processing facilities, sulfur recovery and utility facilities, and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) classifying facilities, in the project operated by Aramco, a state-owned oil company of Saudi Arabia. The company also won a contract for the construction of the “PACO plant”, the largest thermal power plant in Panama, worth US$662 million (748.2 billion won) in September, following a gas plant worth US$117 million (132.2 billion won) in Thailand in March.

“We are enhancing our stable portfolio and expanding our territory into the Middle East, Asia, and Central and South America,” SK E&C explained, adding “We are planning to continue focusing the company’s capabilities on the global construction market. We selected ‘Globalization’ as the main keyword to highlight this.”
