LG Display, for the first time in the LCD industry, won the top spot for three consecutive years in six of the industrial segments. The six refer to the production, sales, size of large-size (9.1 inch+) LCD panels and the market shares of TV-, monitor- and laptop PC-use panel products.

According to the Q3 market analysis report of DisplaySearch, LG’s Q3 proceeds reached US$5.4 billion (28.3%) while its shipment area and volume amounting to 8.08 million square meters (28.3%) and 52.25 million units, respectively. It succeeded in overwhelming its rivals in terms of sales volume, too. The shipments of the TV, monitor and laptop panels ran to 13.61 million (25.8%), 12.3 million (25.4%) and 25.94 million (33.4%) units each during the same period.

Up until recently, it was not easy for a single LCD panel manufacturer to sweep that many segments because the major business fields of those in the industry were different. At this time, LG Display has made it through continuous investments and technological development efforts.

Supplies More Than 10% of Sony’s TV Panel Requirements

LG Display’ supply of LCD TV panels to Sony and its portion in Sony products are on a sharp rise. It is estimated that LG Display’s TV panels accounted for more than 10% of all the TV panels which Sony purchased in the third quarter.

Considering the fact that the two companies resumed a deal at the end of last year in seven years, the increase is quite sharp. As Sony will diversify panels and expand outsourcing next year, LG’s role and portion are expected to expand.

According to an industrial source, Sony purchased 800,000 units of TV panels form LG Display in the third quarter. This figure is much higher than 10%, considering that Sony buys about six million units of TV panels in a quarter. In particular, LG Display doubled its supply to Sony compared to the previous quarter.

According to DisplaySearch, a market survey company, LG Display purchased 330,000 units of TV panels from LG Display in the second quarter. This figure is about 7% of all the TV panels that Sony bought. Of late, Sony came up with a strong restructuring plan including cost reduction of panels to make a turnaround in the TV business in 2013. Sony announced that as part of the plan, the company would expand the volume of outsourced products for TVs. It is projected that this plan will benefit LD Display which began its ODM business earlier as a panel manufacturer.
