Internet for Schools

Internet speeds at Korean schools are reportedly the fastest in the world.

On June 24, the National Information Society Agency (NIA) announced the results of data analysis related to the Internet in 11 countries including Korea, the U.K., France, the U.S., and Australia.

According to the data, Korean schools have the fastest average peak speed at 18 Mbps as of 2012, beating Australia in the runner-up position (91 Mbps).

The NIA said that its consistent effort to improve the speed and quality of the Internet in educational institutions through SchoolNet Service, which is part of the National Info-Comm Service implemented starting in 2006, played a huge role. The agency also explained that its attempt to introduce Internet connections with speeds of 250 Mbps to schools in 2014 contributed to faster Internet speeds by more than 20 times after five years of the initiative.

NIA head Jang Kwang-soo remarked, “We will accelerate Internet speeds at schools in line with a change in the Information and Communications environment, including the increased distribution of mobile devices.” He added, “We are going to build and expand a wireless environment for state-of-the-art smart education.”
