Advanced Metering Infrastructure in Uzbekistan

Officials operate the KT CAS at the control room of the National Integrated Data Center in Uzbekistan.

KT held a ceremony in honor of the completion of a central power control data center in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, on Aug. 20 (local time). The data center will check power use by about eight million households across the nation.

The establishment of the data center was promoted as part of an intelligent electric meter project that controls the use of electricity all over Uzbekistan. KT took charge of the establishment of the KT Central AMI System (CAS) and the National Integrated Data Center. The data center will be able to accommodate eight million smart meters which will be installed in 14 Uzbek states by 2021.

AMI stands for advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), which is an integrated system of smart meters, communications networks, and data management systems that enables two-way communication between utilities and customers.

The establishment of KT CAS platform and integrated data center will enable Uzbekenergo, a specially authorized electric power company in Uzbekistan, to check electricity use by eight million customers and power transmission and distribution in the nation in real time. This will also enable Uzbekenergo to remotely control power supply to customers depending on their payment of electric charges and take prompt actions on power failure sections.

In particular, an artificial intelligence-based big data analysis of meter data collected by the KT CAS Platform will allow Uzbekenergo to disperse electric power use at peak time by applying different charge rates to electricity use time zones. Moreover, the system allows customers to check their electricity usage and charges in real time through an online site. Uzbekistan is expected to be able to effectively manage the nation's integrated power operation by connecting various types of smart meters and linking them with current charging systems.

KT will support the operation of the data center over the next two years and transfer its smart energy infrastructure operation, maintenance and other technology to Uzbekistan.

"We are grateful for the successful establishment of the CAS Data Center based on our partnership with KT," said Ulugbek Mustafayev, chairman of Uzbekenergo’s board. "We want to work with KT to jointly advance into other CIS countries such as Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan."
