The size of mobile shopping using mobile devices like smartphones and tablet PCs has more than doubled within a year. 

Statistics Korea announced the results of its study involving 1001 operators of online shopping malls on May 27. 

The amount of mobile shopping increased 156.6 percent year-on-year to reach 2.893 trillion won (US$2.833 billion) in the first quarter. The total amount of online shopping, on the other hand, was 10.4068 trillion won (US$10.1938 billion), up 16.6 percent from a year ago. 

The proportion of online shopping to total retail sales continues to rise, as seen by 9.7 percent in 2012, 10.9 percent in 2013, and 11.9 percent in Q1 2014.

The ratio of mobile shopping sales for traveling and travel reservation services, and clothing, fashion and related products was 19.1 percent each in Q1, followed by the 10.7 percent of life and car accessories, the 9.6 percent of household appliances, electronics, and communications devices, and the 8.5 percent of food and groceries.
