In an article posted on its website on May 23, the Wall Street Journal said that Samsung Electronics is planning to reveal a smart watch this summer that can also be used as a phone.

Samsung’s smart watches that were introduced to the market so far were required to be connected to a Samsung phone for use, and those previous models did not have any mobile communications functions. Anonymous sources close to Samsung were quoted in the report as saying that people involved in this project are hoping to debut the device in June or July.

According to the article, it is possible for the watch-phone to take pictures, send email, use GPS, interface with Bluetooth, and function as a heart monitor. The device is also going to feature the Tizen operating system, which was co-developed by Samsung and Intel.

After launching the Galaxy Gear last year, the Korean tech giant released a series of smart watches like the Gear 2, the Gear 2 Neo, and the Gear fit. However, all of them need to be tethered to a Galaxy phone in order to make and receive calls.
