Pertrobras America's Claim Rejected

Samsung Heavy Industries announced on June 22 that the U.S. District Court of Texas has rejected a US$250 million damage claim filed by Petrobras America in March 2019.

Petrobras America filed the suit, claiming that a brokerage fee paid to a broker was unfairly used in the course of shipbuilding contract signing between Samsung Heavy Industries and Pride Global Limited, consequently increasing charter fees that Petrobras had to pay.

Previously, Samsung Heavy signed a contract with Pride Global Limited in 2007 and delivered a drillship in 2011. Petrovras later signed a five-year contract to use the drillship with Pride Global in 2011.

"We have been actively responding to Petrobras's claim because we believed that it was poorly founded with insufficient litigation requirements," a Samsung Heavy Industries official said. "The court has accepted Samsung Heavy Industries' request for rejection of the claim."
