A Brand Specially Protected by Chinese Government

China has officially recognized Korea Ginseng Corporation’s Cheong Kwan Jang as a well-known brand. This means the brand is eligible for special protection by the Chinese government.

China is where South Korean companies apply for the largest number of trademarks and their intellectual property rights are violated most frequently. In this regard, global as well as South Korean enterprises are making much effort to obtain the official recognition to facilitate their business in China.

At present, more than 25 million trademarks are registered in China. However, the number of well-known brands is very low, including only 10 or so South Korean brands such as Samsung and LG.

Well-known brand registration in China leads to a ban on registration and use in different as well as similar product fields and, as such, brand value protection can be guaranteed. The registration requires Chinese people’s awareness, a high level of credibility and good reputations.

The Chinese central and provincial governments are currently managing well-known brands separately. The trademark recently obtained by the corporation is based on Article 13 of the Chinese Trademark Act and guarantees nationwide protection. The corporation said that the Cheong Kwan Jang brand represents Goryeo ginseng and has approximately 5,000 trademark rights in more than 60 countries.
