DNS-related Inquiries on Steep Increase

The Korea Internet & Security Agency is working on a new national domain name server (DNS) project in order to respond to a rapid increase in related inquiries. The final version of the project is planned to be announced late this year along with the sixth basic plan for the Internet Address Resources Act.

The number of national DNS-related inquiries has increased for years in relation to the Internet of Things, 5G communications, and so on. Specifically, the daily average increased from approximately 1.73 billion to over 2.16 billion from 2014 to last year. It reached a new high of 2.8 billion after the recent implementation of social distancing against the spread of COVID-19.

Under the circumstances, the agency is planning to set up a next-generation national DNS infrastructure down the road. The idea is to better utilize abundant DNS data for industrial purposes such as marketing.

In addition, the agency is going to reduce the number of ActiveX to less than 100 this year. On the 500 major websites in the private sector, the number fell from 810 to 510 and then to 143 from 2017 to 2019. The agency’s target for this year is 81 to be specific.
