To Commercialize 5G MEC

KT officials test KT's 5G network at the company’s 5G Edge Communication Center.

KT announced on March 4 that it has successfully verified 5G mobile edge computing (MEC) technology in cooperation with Telephonica of Spain, Telstra of Australia and China Unicom of China.

KT delivered content created by users through 5G telecommunications edges of the global carriers. This technology is one of the key technologies required for global 5G MEC commercialization.

MEC processes data very close to users. When this technology is applied to 5G networks, people will be able to use services with maximized ultra-low latency capabilities.

To verify the technology, KT signed a business agreement with leading telecom companies in Spain, Australia and China in February. The technology verification is aimed at developing solutions that link 5G MEC technologies with multiple operators and connecting globally available services, such as artificial intelligence, connected cars, cloud games, and smart factories, with network infrastructure capabilities.

KT and three global telecommunications companies will gradually develop and verify basic structural tests such as service continuity during the moves of edges between countries and roaming, and integration with other MEC platforms in order to commercialize global 5G MEC.
