Malware Attacks

Cybersecurity firm FireEye released its 2013 Advanced Threat Report (ATR) on April 2, which provides a high-level overview of computer network attacks, including 39,504 cyber security incidents that the company discovered around the world last year.

According to the report, South Korea received 417 out of 4,192 APT incidents, which placed the nation in the runner-up position after the U.S. The third spot was taken by Canada, followed by Japan and the UK.

2013 saw 17,995 malware infections, a nearly two-fold increase from 2012. It was found that a malware attack occurred every 1.5 seconds on average in 2013. In total, 22 million command and control (CnC) communications, which cause malware attacks, were found in 206 countries, a year-on-year increase of 22 nations. Korea was one of the top hosts for CnC servers, along with the US, Germany, and China.

By industry, the government was the No. 1 target, followed by services/consulting, technology, financial services, and telecommunications.
