A malfunction of a fire extinguishing system caused a leakage of carbon dioxide at Samsung Electronics’ R&D center in Suwon City, Gyeonggi Province at round 5 a.m. on March 27.

The company’s own rescue crew was dispatched to the scene of the accident and attempted to rescue a 53-year-old man at the scene who worked for a partner company of Samsung. However, he died two hours after arriving at a nearby hospital.

Local police and fire authorities believe that the building’s fire extinguishing system released carbon dioxide after it wrongly detected a fire, suffocating the man. They are conducting an investigation to determine the exact cause of the malfunction and death.
