For Leaving Negative Comments

The court has imposed 173 million won in fines on haters who left negative comments on SK Group chairman Chey Tae-won’s live-in girlfriend.

The court has imposed 173 million won in fines on haters who left negative comments on SK Group chairman Chey Tae-won’s live-in girlfriend surnamed Kim.

Previously, Kim lodged a compensation claim against nine members of an Internet cafe. The Seoul Central District Court ruled on Sept. 25 that the defendants must pay 173 million won (US$144,000) to Kim.

Kim said in her complaint that the haters opened an online cafe and continuously posted comments slandering her. She also claimed that they encouraged other members to leave abusive comments on her.

The court said, “The comments are about the privacy of a person, so they cannot be seen as intended for public interests.”

Chey revealed his relationship with Kim through a letter to a newspaper in December 2015. In the letter, he confessed that he fathered a daughter out of wedlock. In addition, Chey has filed a petition to divorce his wife Roh Soh-yeong, director of Art Center Nabi and daughter of ex-President Roh Tae-woo.

Roh refused to divorce Chey. Chey currently lives with Kim and appeared in public with Kim in May for the first time. The divorce proceedings between Chey and Roh are still in progress.
