Samsung Electronics Expanding Share of TV Market

The gap in sales between QLED TVs and OLED TVs is expected to widen further this year.

The large gap between QLED TVs and OLED TVs in terms of sales is expected to further widen this year.

QLED TVs and OLED TVs are currently leading the global premium TV market. Samsung Electronics is the most representative producer of QLED TVs, while LG Electronics is the standard-bearer of the OLED TV camp. The two companies are locking horns over the picture quality of 8K TVs.

Market research firm IHS Markit forecast on Sept. 25 that a total of 5.45 million QLED TVs will be sold this year. This figure is an increase of 11 percent from its estimate of 4.9 million units.

Samsung Electronics played a big role in boosting the QLED TV sales forecast. The company is expected to sell more than five million units of QLED TVs this year, accounting for more than 90 percent of the total QLED TV sales.

In contrast, IHS Markit lowered its estimate for OLED TV sales this year by 8 percent from 3.25 million units to 3 million units.
