The follow-up of Samsung Electronics’ smart watch Galaxy Gear is expected to be equipped with the Tizen operating system. The Internet edition of the USA Today reported on February 18 (local time) that the new product will be unveiled with Tizen OS at this year’s Mobile World Congress scheduled for next week in Barcelona, Spain.

Tizen is an HTML5-based open-source OS developed by the Tizen Alliance, which is led by Samsung Electronics and Intel. Its members include a large number of device manufacturers and mobile carriers around the world.

It is said that the shift from Android to Tizen is because the open-source platform can have some advantages in terms of ecosystem expansion and compatibility. Samsung Electronics has already applied the Tizen to its smart camera NX300.

Industry insiders are expecting that Samsung Electronics will apply the OS to a variety of products, ranging from smart watches to smart phones and smart TVs. In particular, its new smart TVs are planned to come with the Tizen OS within this year. “We cannot disclose the specific specifications or details of any product before launch,” said Samsung Electronics.
