Masayoshi Son, chairman of Japan’s SoftBank Group, discussed global economic issues with heads of major Korean business groups on July 4. Son met with the Korean business leaders at the Korean Furniture Museum in Seongbuk-dong, Seoul, after visiting President Moon Jae-in earlier in the day.

In attendance were Lee Jae-yong, vice chairman of Samsung Electronics; Chung Eui-sun, senior vice chairman of Hyundai Motor Group; Koo Kwang-mo, chairman of LG Group; Kim Dong-kwan, managing director of Hanwah Q CELL; Lee Hae-jin, global investment officer (GIO) of Naver; and Kim Taek-jin, CEO of NCSoft among others.

Especially, Lee Jae-yong and Masayoshi Son came to the museum together in a passenger car, suggesting the two had a long talk during the ride. Participants in the gathering discussed pending issues in the global IT industry such as 5G mobile communication and artificial intelligence (AI).

Some industry analysts speculated that as the Japanese government initiated measures to regulate exports of semiconductors and display materials to Korea, the Korea-Japan Businesspeople Meeting might have dealt with the issue.

However, Son avoided mentioning the relationships between Korea and Japan on his way to dinner. "I do not know much about politics," Son told reporters when questioned about relations between Korea and Japan and the roles that SoftBank and Samsung Electronics could play to improve them. Korean business leaders did not take questions about Korea-Japan relations.
