The patent examination service of the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) will be exported to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

KIPO signed an MOU with the UAE to cooperate on intellectual property rights protection during a high-level meeting in Seoul on February 7. This is the first time for Korea to export its patent examination service.

KIPO will dispatch its patent examiners to the UAE. They will deliberate on the patent applications received by the UAE Ministry of Economy and examine the patents filed in Korea by UAE companies as well. It will also carry out consulting work for the setup of a patent office in the UAE, and the establishment of regulations and systems related to patents, informatization, and manpower training.

Based on this agreement, the office plans to provide a patent examination service by establishing the details in the first half of this year. In the long-term, it is going to proceed with a comprehensive measure to support the construction of UAE’s intellectual property rights system, including informatization and manpower training and development.
