Spuring Efforts to Scale up Hydrogen Economy

Hyundai Motor will develop a ship powered by its hydrogen fuel cells.

Hyundai Motor will develop a ship powered by its hydrogen fuel cells in cooperation with Gangwon Province, the company announced on May 9.

The commercialization of a hydrogen-powered vessel will diversify the use of hydrogen fuel cells, contributing to Korea’s plan to usher in an era of hydrogen economy.

Hyundai Motor has signed an MOU with Gangwon Province to apply hydrogen fuel cell systems to small 5-ton fishing boats. The agreement was signed at the International Hydrogen Forum 2019 held at the Alpensia Convention Center in Gangwon Province on May 9.

It will mark the first time that Hyundai's fuel cell system will be applied to mobility other than vehicles.

Hyundai Motor will verify application of its fuel cells to coastal vessels by the end of 2022, improve the performance of its fuel cell systems by 2025 and apply the technology to real ships after 2030. Hyundai Motor will develop a stack module for ocean-going ships by 2022.
