Ready to Mass Produce Foldable Phones

Samsung Electronics plans to roll out more than one million units of its foldable smartphone next year.

Samsung Electronics has made it clear that the company would launch its foldable smartphone in the first half of next year. It said annual shipments of the new smartphone would exceed one million units, meaning the Korean smartphone giant is ready to launch a final product, not an experimental one.

The company plans to add the foldable phone to its official product lineup and release new bendable models every year.

"We will launch a foldable smartphone in the first half of next year whatever it takes. We will produce more than one million units of the foldable model next year,” said Ko Dong-jin, head of the IM Business Division at Samsung Electronics in a meeting with Korean reporters in San Francisco on Nov. 8 (local time).

The Samsung foldable phone will have a 4.58-inch front cover display when folded and a 7.3-inch main display when unfolded. The new model is expected to hit a limited number of countries initially due to its low production volume.

"The foldable smartphone will go on sale in a limited number of countries due to its low initial production volume," Ko said. “Samsung Electronics's flagship smartphones are launched in nearly 120 countries around the world. But the foldable model will be launched in fewer counties and by fewer mobile carriers in those countries."
