To Foster Domestic Drone, Robot Markets

The Korean government is promoting civilian-military cooperation in the drone and robot sectors to expand Korean companies' presence in the global market.

The Korean government will promote cooperation between civilian and national defense organizations in the drone and robot sectors.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the Ministry of Science and ICT, and the Defense Acquisition Program Administration held a meeting on drones and robots at the Korea Technology Center on Oct. 30 and decided to support civilian-military cooperation to jump-start the domestic drone and robot industries.

Specifically, cooperation will be promoted in research development (R&D), establishment of infrastructure for activation of pilot programs in the military area, and support for demand creation in the military area.

In relation to the R&D cooperation plan, the three government departments and agencies will support the short-term pilot operation of commercial drones and robots in the military area. As a medium-term project, they plan to develop drones and robots that can be used jointly by the civilian sector and the military. For a long-term project, they will support the development of core technologies for the development of future drones and robots.

In order to speed up infrastructure construction, they decided to establish a cooperative project for the civilian and military sectors, such as joint planning of R&D projects and finding improvements for policy and system through drone and robot area civilian-military cooperation council, where government departments, military, research institutes, and companies participate. It also supports to connect military divisions with companies that own relevant technologies for pilot operation in military area.

Support measures for creating military demand include supporting the follow-up review of technology for military for technologies that were evaluated to be useful in military after the pilot operation and supporting the additional development for operation and evaluation in the actual military operational environment upon needs.
