Bacteria in Canned Ham Products

The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) of Korea ordered Daesang Co. to stop selling "Luncheon Meat," a canned ham product, on oct.22.

The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) of Korea has suspended the sales Daesang Co.’s “Luncheon Meat” following detection of bacteria from the canned product. It also ordered the company, which sells foodstuffs under the “Chungjungone” brand, to collect all of the already shipped products.

Consumers say that the company's lunch meat is put on the table for children, food safety on the product should be reinforced.

The ministry said on October 22 that some products of Chungjungone Luncheon Meat manufactured by Daesang’s Cheonan plant were found to be inadequate in a bacterial growth test.

The exact type of bacteria was not confirmed because the test confirmed only the presence of bacterial cultures.

The ministry issued orders to suspend sales of the products and asked consumers to cooperate in collecting the already shipped products. The products to be collected are the ones with shelf life until May 15, 2019.

However, an official of the company said, "Since the products are sterilized before the time of shipment, no bacteria should be detected. In fact, no problem was found in a test done by the company.”

"The company will stop the sales of the product and collect them at the request of the government to resolve consumers’ anxiety and minimize inconvenience. The company plans to investigate the matter in various ways to identify the cause," he said.
