STX Offshore & Shipbuilding is going to export coast guard patrol boats to Peru, seven months after winning a similar deal from Colombia.

The Korean shipbuilder announced on December 11 that the company and the defense ministry of Peru signed a contract worth 75 billion won (US$71.3 million) on December 10 to build five 500-ton patrol ships (options for three additional vessels included).

Materials and equipment from the Jinhae shipyard will be shipped in completely knocked down (CKD) form, and the vessels will be built in Peru by the end of 2015, through technical support from STX O&S.

54.5m long and 8.5m wide, the patrol vessel would conduct its duty with a speed of 22 knots, armed with 30 mm guns.

Additional orders are expected, since Peruvian defense minister Pedro Cateriano said that Peru intends to make 10 coast guard patrol boats based on Korean technology at a meeting between Korean and Peruvian defense ministers in Seoul on November 27.

Last March, the shipbuilder struck its first deal for two 250-ton patrol ships with Colombia’s defense ministry.
