LG Electronics has opened an artificial intelligence (AI) research center in Toronto, Canada, marking the first time that a Korean company opened a research institute to study AI in a foreign country.

On August 1, LG Electronics said that the Toronto AI Research Center would begin regular operations in September. The AI research center conducts AI research in collaboration with the University of Toronto. In Canada, colleges are taking the lead in AI research including machine learning. Global companies are also investing in AI research in Canada.

LG Electronics will concentrate on acquiring AI source technology through research in the field of deep learning. In addition to cooperating with local AI start-ups, the company plans to invest in start-ups.

In June of last year, LG Electronics established the AI research center at a software center under the chief technology officer (CTO). Researchers are studying voice, video, biometric, and deep learning algorithms at the center. Earlier this year, LG Electronics created the AI research organization 'Advanced AI' under its research center in Silicon Valley of the US. LG Electronics expects synergies out of AI research organizations in Seoul, Silicon Valley, Bangalore of India, Moscow and Toronto.
