Korea’s builders have won over US$600 billion worth of overseas construction orders up to now. 

According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transportation on December 3, the accumulated amount of overseas construction orders has reached US$601.2 billion in the 48 years since 1965. 

More than half of the amount has been obtained in the past five years, showing a recent sharp hike since 2008. 

By region, the traditional Middle Eastern market gave the lion’s share of 58 percent at US$347.7 billion, followed by Asia at 30 percent with US$178.4 billion. 

By category, plants accounted for 55 percent at U$332.0 billion, followed by architectural projects at 22 percent and public infra projects at 19 percent. 

Last year, the Korean share of the global construction market jumped to 8.1 percent, putting Korea at 6th in 2012 from 13th at 4.8 percent in 2007, according to Engineering News-Record, a US-based business magazine.
