Kolon Industries Inc. announced on July 3 that it has supplied foldable smartphone developers with a prototype of its newly developed transparent polyimide film that can be used for smartphone cover windows.

The company has developed a transparent polyimide film for the first time in the world. The next-generation display material is as transparent and strong as glass, but it can be folded hundreds of thousands times without leaving any scratch. This is why it is viewed as a key material for foldable smartphones.

Kolon Industries is ready to mass produce the new film. It has set up a production line in its Gumi plant by investing about 90 billion won (US$80.72 million). The production line was completed in the first half of this year. Kolon Industries named its self-developed transparent polyimide film as CPIⓡ. The company completed the registration of the trademark in South Korea in November 2015.

Kolon Industries holds 104 patents related to clear polyimide films, accounting for 80 percent of the total domestic patents in this sector. The company also has 200 patents in the world, which take up 50 percent of the total related international patents.
