Daewoo Engineering & Construction said on November 26 it has won an order worth US$693 million (736 billion won) to build a breakwater in southern Iraq. The project owner is the state-run General Company for Ports of Iraq (GCPI).

The period of construction is 36 months from the groundbreaking. Daewoo is to complete the 15.8 kilometer western breakwater for Al Faw Grand Port in Basra by 2016.

In particular, the construction is a part of a large-scale project to develop Al Faw Grand Port, which is Iraq’s only access to the sea. The Iraqi government plans to develop the port to be a global top ten harbor by connecting it with the railways of Turkey and other neighboring countries, which would provide further opportunities to construct a series of large-scale construction projects for container terminals, dry bulk terminals, port hinterlands, and a naval base.

The deal came three months after Daewoo E&C secured a US$709 million order to build natural gas processing facilities in Iraq’s Akkas gas field.
