Samsung Display Executive Director Jung Seok-woo announced plans to expedite the production of RGB-based micro OLEDs at the OLED Korea conference held at the K Hotel in Seoul on March 28.

During his presentation on the Development Strategy for AR/VR in Future Displays, Jung emphasized the collaboration with ai hub to prepare for the mass production of micro OLEDs. “We are working closely with ai hub, a specialist company in RGB micro OLEDs that we acquired last year, to launch our products to the market as soon as possible,” he highlighted.

The RGB method shows technological advancements over the white OLED (W-OLED) method currently used by Sony. It is more suited for extended reality (XR) devices like Apple’s Vision Pro.

As Apple and Samsung Electronics are developing XR devices utilizing OLEDoS technology, Samsung Display is expected to actively employ ai hub’s expertise in equipping XR devices with RGB micro OLEDs.

Industry insiders predict that Samsung Display will begin mass production of RGB micro OLEDs within three years. Lee Chung-hoon, CEO of UB Research, presented a forecast at the OLED and XR Industry Outlook, suggesting that Chinese companies’ smartphone OLED shipments will surpass those of Korean firms by 2026. “This year, Korea’s smartphone OLED shipments stand at 442 million units (54.9%), with China at 363 million units (45.1%). However, by 2026, China is expected to lead with 53.4% of shipments, overtaking Korea,” Lee analyzed.
