Samsung SDI, a leader in the all-solid-state battery (ASB) sector, has reconfirmed its goal to start mass production of all-solid-state batteries in 2027.

During the annual general meeting held on March 20 at The K Hotel Seoul in Seocho District, Seoul, Choi Yoon-ho, CEO of Samsung SDI, announced, “We plan to proceed with the mass production of all-solid-state batteries as scheduled in 2027.”

Previously, Samsung SDI established the ASB Business Promotion Team at the end of last year to oversee its all-solid-state battery business. The company announced plans to start mass production in 2027, following the creation and provision of samples by 2026.

When asked about the possibility of advancing the start of operations for the StarPlus Energy Plant 1, a North American joint venture with Stellantis, earlier than the initially targeted first quarter of next year, Choi stated, “We are prepared to start mass production as soon as possible,” but added, “Since it involves our customers, we will announce the specific start date once it is finalized.”

Samsung SDI is constructing two joint venture plants with Stellantis and one with GM in Indiana in the U.S.

Choi also mentioned, “As the electric vehicle battery market is expected to continue growing, we plan to expand our production capacity and are preparing to set up a standalone factory.”
