Samsung Electronics is set to unveil its next-generation storage service tailored for the artificial intelligence era.

According to industry sources on March 14, Samsung Electronics will participate in the GTC 2024 NVIDIA AI Developers Conference held at the McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, California, in the U.S., from March 18 to 21. At the event, Samsung will unveil memory solutions for AI and machine learning (ML), including the recently developed 12-layer High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) 3E, alongside a new storage service.

With the goal of “redefining AI infrastructure,” Samsung Electronics is targeting the server Solid State Drive (SSD) market by leading with its services. The company plans to launch a petabyte (PB)-level SSD solution, dubbed PBSSD, along with a subscription service in the U.S. market in the second quarter to address the era of ultra-high-capacity data.

This business model allows customers to use the service by paying a subscription fee instead of purchasing the ultra-high-capacity SSD solutions outright. Enterprises using the service can flexibly utilize SSD storage without the need to build separate infrastructure, while simultaneously receiving various services from Samsung Electronics related to storage management, security, and upgrades.

A petabyte represents a unit 1,000 times larger than a terabyte (TB); 1 PB can hold approximately 174,000 movies if each is 6 GB in size.

Samsung Electronics stated, “The subscription service will help reduce initial investment costs in storage infrastructure for our customers and cut down on maintenance expenses.”

At GTC 2024, Samsung Electronics will host a special session on “The Value of Storage as a Service for AI/ML and Data Analysis,” planning to demonstrate how the high-capacity SSD subscription service can simplify data management and economically expand storage in an efficient manner.
