Samsung Heavy Industries received the world’s first cybersecurity technology certificate of a smart ship solution of its own development from the American classification society ABS.

Samsung Heavy Industries announced on March 26 that the company recently acquired the ABS certificate after starting the development of smart ship cyber security technology that protects ships’ data, networks that deliver the data and data storage centers from internal and external cyber attacks in September last year.

The cyber security technology developed by Samsung Heavy Industries passed all the stringent judging criteria of 16 items recommended by the ABS based on the ISO 27001 Information Protection Management System and cyber safety guidelines such as physical security, operational security, access control, security control and mock hacking.

As information exchanges within ships or between ships and various centers on land have increased with the recent integration of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) and ship navigation technology, an emphasis is put on need for security to protect data and systems from external attacks in cyberspace.

In fact, in June of last year, the world's No. 1 container shipping company, Maersk, was reportedly suffered a loss of about US$300 million as an attack by ransomware paralyzed the logistics system and suspended cargo loading and unloading operations. In addition, there is concern about damages such as GPS disturbance and information leakage caused by viruses.
