KOLBM20, the microbiome discovered by Kolmar Korea, is the first of its kind in the world.

Kolmar Korea has discovered the world’s first microbiome (in-human microbiome) that suppresses skin aging caused by ultraviolet exposure. In addition, the related research findings were published in international SCI-level journals, and its research achievements were recognized worldwide.

Kolmar Korea announced that it has published a research paper in the journal Current Issues in Molecular Biology (CIMB) that uses lactobacillus obtained from women’s skin in their 20s to suppress the expression of MMP-1 caused by ultraviolet rays.

Recently, various industries such as cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and health functional foods are researching and developing microbiomes, but Kolmar Korea is the first case to achieve remarkable success in the field of photoaging.

Kolmar Korea has found that one of the causes of photoaging is that KOLBM20, a component derived from lactobacillus, one of the skin microbiomes, decreases with age.

It has been confirmed that KOLBM20 is most common in skin in the 20s and gradually decreases with age. KOLBM20 is short for Kolmar Biome 20, which was named by Kolmar Korea when it was first discovered, making it the world's first.

KOLBM20 protects collagen, a protein that maintains skin elasticity from ultraviolet rays. When the skin is exposed to ultraviolet rays, it triggers the expression of "skin elastic gene (MMP-1)" which breaks down collagen. KOLBM20 reduces the expression of this gene, thereby suppressing the aging process caused by decreased skin elasticity.

Kolmar Korea plans to use KOLBM20 in the future to develop sun care products that effectively suppress the expression of skin elasticity genes even when ultraviolet rays penetrate the skin. It intends to apply KOLBM20, which decreases with age, differently by age group to develop products optimized for suppressing photoaging.

A representative from Kolmar Korea stated, "Amid growing interest in photoaging caused by ultraviolet rays, Kolmar Korea is the first in the world to analyze the correlation with the microbiome. We will take the lead in developing innovative products by stably fusing KOLBM20, which can effectively suppress photoaging, into suncare formulations.”
