Hyundai Engineering & Construction (Hyundai E&C) has become highly likely to win a project to build Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant in Bulgaria with a total budget of nearly 19 trillion won, foreign media outlets reported.

The Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant Committee reviewed five proposals and concluded that Hyundai E&C was the only one that met the requirements, Russia's Tass News Agency reported on Feb. 18, citing local Bulgarian media outlets. In addition to Hyundai E&C, the bidders included consortia from the United States, the Netherlands, and China.

The project to build two additional nuclear power plants at Bulgaria's Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant Complex is aimed at making the two nuclear power plants go live before 2035. They will have AP1000 nuclear reactors from U.S. nuclear power company Westinghouse.

The project will cost US$14 billion. In the nuclear power industry, the project size per AP1000 is about 7 to 8 trillion won.

If Hyundai E&C wins this project it will represent a significant portion of the contractor’s total sales. The Bulgarian Ministry of Energy is expected to select the final winner as early as next week.
