Hyundai Rotem’s U.S. subsidiary has won an electric vehicle supply order. The company announced on Feb. 6 that Hyundai Rotem USA was selected as the final bidder for the LA Metro electric train supply project ordered by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority. The business is valued at approximately US$963.69 million.

The project is aimed at replacing the local aging electric vehicles that have been in operation since 1993 and responding to the surge in transportation demand for the LA Olympic and Paralympic Games to be held in 2028.

Hyundai Rotem won the order over competitors based on its electric train manufacturing technology and track record as well as its ability to implement the project on time. The company was recognized for delivering electric trains ahead of schedule in 2005 and 2018 for Vancouver driverless electric train supply projects in Canada.

The electric trains to be deployed in Los Angeles will run in a two-car formation with up to six vehicles in a chained operation. Each car is able to transport up to 245 passengers and hit a maximum operating speed of 113 kph.

“We will do our best to deliver electric trains that satisfy both local citizens and tourists based on our experience and capabilities accumulated through a number of local projects in the United States,” said an official from Hyundai Rotem.

Meanwhile, Hyundai Rotem has won orders for California double-decker carriages, Florida double-decker carriages, and Philadelphia electric train projects in 2006. Since then, the company has been carrying out various projects in the United States, including landing additional orders for Boston double-decker carriages and Denver electric trains in 2008 and 2010, respectively, and more Boston double-decker carriages in 2019.
