Samsung Electronics is set to revolutionize the Chinese smartphone market with its upcoming artificial intelligence (AI) phone, the Galaxy S24 series, featuring Baidu's generative AI. This strategy, aimed at enhancing AI service quality through collaboration with various AI partners and capturing the Chinese market, is based on Large Language Models (LLM).

According to CNBC and other sources on Jan. 27, Samsung Electronics and Baidu have partnered to incorporate Baidu’s generative AI, “Ernie,” into the Galaxy S24 series sold in China. Samsung has already integrated its own “Gauss” LLM and Google’s “Gemini” into the Galaxy S24. With the addition of more models, Samsung is making a significant move towards localizing its offerings in China.

LLMs, typically large-scale language models, utilize deep learning algorithms and statistical modeling for natural language processing tasks. They are capable of understanding and generating language by learning from extensive linguistic data, including sentence structures, grammar, and meanings.

Gauss is Samsung’s proprietary AI applied to home appliances. In the S24, it is adapted to mobile devices, providing essential AI services. The devices support on-device AI capable of collecting and processing information independently without cloud connectivity. This includes “Gemini Nano,” offering services like real-time call translation, message translation, and converting recorded audio to text.

Particularly for the Chinese version, Baidu’s Ernie, which can learn Chinese, is an added feature. It supports Samsung’s Note Assistant function, enabling users to translate content and summarize long text with a simple button click. Ernie has already received approval from Chinese authorities, necessary for providing generative AI services in the local market.

Ernie is highly regarded in China, considered on par with OpenAI’s generative AI in terms of quality and user base. Baidu’s latest version, Ernie 4.0, released in August last year, offers creation, inference, and memory functions. It has been reported to have advanced enough to compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT 4.0 model. Within four months of its release, it surpassed 100 million users.

Robin Li, CEO of Baidu, emphasized at the Baidu World 2023 event in October 2023, “ErnieBot has improved significantly, now on par with ChatGPT 4.”

Samsung Electronics aims to provide optimal AI services to Galaxy users and to continue developing and collaborating on LLM solutions with various partners, including Google and Baidu, shaping the future of mobile AI.

On Jan. 17 (local time), Noh Tae-moon, president of Samsung Electronics’ Mobile Experience Business, mentioned in a press event with domestic reporters that Samsung is already collaborating with various partners and will continue to pursue diverse cooperative partnerships with an open approach.
