SK telecom anticipates further advancement in artificial intelligence (AI) technology this year, with plans to enhance its AI personal assistant “A.” and secure allies in the global market for tangible results.

On Jan. 25, Yoo Young-sang, CEO of SK Telecom, discussed the company’s AI strategy with the press at the 2024 New Year’s Greeting event held at the Seoul 63 Convention Center.

Yoo introduced SK telecom’s goal for the year as “generating results in the AI sector,” emphasizing the focus on implementing and achieving results from the AI pyramid strategy announced last year.

The AI pyramid strategy unveiled by SK telecom last year includes three main areas: AI infrastructure, AIX, and AI services. The plan involves securing and enhancing infrastructure capabilities such as AI data centers, AI semiconductors, and multi LLMs, innovating existing telecommunications, media, and enterprise businesses through AI under 'AIX', and expanding into urban air mobility (UAM) and healthcare. The 'AI services' area aims to establish close relationships with customers through top-level global AI personal assistants and expand in collaboration with global telecommunications companies.

Particularly, Yoo highlighted the technological advancement of the AI assistant, a key product in the AI services area. He suggested that the enhanced services, including SK telecom’s AI assistant “A.,” would lead to a more tangible experience in the telecommunications sector.

Yoo also expressed anticipation for devices optimized for AI, such as the upcoming Galaxy S24 series, set to launch on Jan. 31. He noted, “Currently, AI-related devices are limited to smartphones, but many new types of devices are emerging. Although it’s still early, we are preparing for these devices with AI services in mind and aim to launch related services.”

Yoo announced that SK telecom would unveil related alliances and technologies at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) taking place from Feb. 26 to 29.
