KT has announced its plans to construct a new submarine cable to meet the surging demand for cloud, big data, and internet traffic between Asian countries. On Jan. 24, KT signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the Asia Link for advanced Performance of High-speed Access (ALPHA) project, aimed at building a new Asian submarine cable, with representatives from telecommunications companies in Indonesia, Japan, and other nations. The consortium, including KT, plans to construct a submarine cable connecting South Korea, Japan, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Vietnam.

This MOU showcases KT’s globally recognized capabilities in submarine cable design, technology, and operational leadership. KT aims to finalize the construction plan for the ALPHA submarine cable by 2024, in collaboration with consortium members, based on its expertise in submarine cable technology. This plan includes reviewing and applying next-generation technologies and securing optimal routes. Myung Je-hoon, head of KT Enterprise’s telecommunications business division, stated, “Through the construction of the ALPHA cable, we will respond in a timely manner to the rapidly increasing demand for cloud, big data, and AI traffic in the Asian region among our Enterprise customers, and we expect to provide stable international communication services.”
