Daewoo Engineering and Construction announced on Jan. 23 that it has completed the construction of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Sea Link, the longest sea bridge in India.

In 2018, Daewoo E&C started its participation in the the Mumbai Trans Harbour Sea Link construction project through a joint venture with TATA Projects Limited, a construction subsidiary of TATA Group, one of the largest conglomerates in India. The construction, spanning approximately 69 months, was successfully completed with no accidents.

Daewoo E&C took charge of the construction, design, procurement, and process management of a significant portion of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Sea Link project, which spans a total of 21.8 km, including the main 7.8 km section of the six-lane sea bridge and an interchange, marking the maximum difficulty level in construction.

To prevent damage to any mangrove forests, which are referred to as the “lungs of the Earth” for their excellent carbon absorption capabilities, and minimize coastal pollution at the Mumbai site, Daewoo E&C implemented the Precast Segment Method (PSM) construction technique.

The PSM technique involves manufacturing bridge superstructures of a predetermined length in a factory, transporting them to the construction site, and then using a crane to connect and assemble the segments.

Through the use of this method, Daewoo E&C minimized work near the mangrove forests adjacent to the bridge, effectively reducing any potential damage to the forests.

With the opening of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Sea Link, the travel time between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai in India has significantly reduced from the previous 2 hours to just 30 minutes. Consequently, there are expectations of a remarkable improvement in the logistics and transportation infrastructure around Navi Mumbai.

A representative from Daewoo E&C stated, “The successful and accident-free completion, overcoming challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the unique monsoon period in India, was possible due to close collaboration with the client, supervision, and local teams, along with Daewoo E&C’s excellent civil engineering expertise. We will actively pursue additional projects, leveraging our strong technical capabilities, particularly in marine construction.”
