Samsung Biologics announced on Jan. 22 that it has been awarded the Platinum medal, the highest rating given only to the top 1% of companies, in Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) evaluation by EcoVadis, a global sustainability assessment firm.

Established in France in 2007, EcoVadis evaluates over 100,000 companies across 175 countries annually in four areas: environment, labor & human rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement, awarding Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze ratings.

Having recorded a Gold rating in 2022, Samsung Biologics ascended a notch to achieve the top-tier Platinum rating in the 2023 evaluation. The Platinum rating is awarded to only the top 1% of around 100,000 global companies.

Samsung Biologics was highly praised for strategically enhancing its ESG policies and reports, as well as for expanding participation in global initiatives such as the UK’s Royal-led Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI) and the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC). The company was also recognized for strengthening its information and physical security activities, which led to a higher score than the previous year.

In the labor & human rights category, Samsung Biologics was acknowledged for its excellence in systematic operations across policy establishment, action, and reporting. The company has established diverse and equitable labor & human rights policies, maintained policies on work environment and employee health, and implemented measures against discrimination and harassment.

John Rim, the CEO of Samsung Biologics, stated, “Our multifaceted efforts in responding to climate change and systematic supply chain management have led to international recognition of our ESG competitiveness. We will further strengthen sustainable management and fulfill our social responsibilities as a global top-tier Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization.”
