Hwang Joo-ho, the CEO of Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), has been engaging in activities to secure the Dukovany new nuclear power plant project in the Czech Republic for two days from Jan. 16.

On Jan. 17, CEO Hwang visited the Czech Power Company (CEZ) and the Czech Ministry of Industry and Trade, explaining the technological capabilities and business management expertise of South Korean nuclear power. He also presented the current development status of next-generation technologies, including small modular reactors (SMR) and hydrogen energy. Subsequently, during a meeting with President of the Senate of the Czech Republic Milos Vystrcil, he urged for fair and transparent proceedings in the bidding process for the new nuclear power plant project.

On Jan. 16 (local time), CEO Hwang visited Doosan Skoda Power, a leading nuclear equipment manufacturer in the Czech Republic, and renewed the cooperation memorandum of understanding (MOU) established in 2018.

On the same day, CEO Hwang visited the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, Czech Republic, and signed an MOU for collaborative efforts in workforce training and joint research and development (R&D). South Korea has been closely collaborating with the Czech Republic in the academic sector since 2019. The Korea Electric Power Corporation International Nuclear Graduate School (KINGS) has also been engaging in exchanges and cooperation in various areas, including student exchanges, joint research, and mutual collaboration in the field of nuclear energy education, with institutions such as the Czech Technical University in Prague (CTU), Brno University of Technology (BTU), and the University of West Bohemia.

Meanwhile, CEO Hwang is scheduled to continue his activities related to the new nuclear power plant project in the Konin region, Poland, starting from Jan. 18. This includes the opening of the KHNP office in Warsaw, Poland, and meetings with key local figures.

The new nuclear power plant project in the Czech Republic began its bidding process in March 2022. The KHNP submitted its initial bid in November of the same year and followed up with the final bid in October 2023. The client for the new nuclear power plant project in the Czech Republic is currently conducting the bid evaluation with plans to select the preferred bidder in the first half of this year.
