Samsung Electronics’ first artificial intelligence (AI) smartphone, the Galaxy S24 series, is set to be unveiled on Jan. 18.

According to industry sources on Jan. 14, Samsung Electronics will reveal the Galaxy S24 series at its first half of the year product launch event, Galaxy Unpacked 2024, scheduled for 10 a.m. (local time) on Jan. 17 (3 a.m. Korean Standard Time on Jan. 18) in San Jose, California, the U.S.

Samsung Electronics has teased the most notable feature of the Galaxy S24 series as the inclusion of Galaxy AI. Galaxy AI is a new brand encompassing Samsung Electronics’ mobile AI experience. The company has prominently featured the phrase “Galaxy AI is coming” in its Unpacked promotional campaign.

One officially announced feature of Galaxy AI is real-time call translation. This feature enables natural communication in one’s native language when speaking with foreigners, as AI will automatically translate to the language of the conversation partner in real time.

Call translation is not a new service. SK telecom already offers real-time call translation through “AI a.dot Interpretation Call.” However, the a.dot Interpretation Call relies on SK telecom servers and is not usable abroad. In contrast, Galaxy AI operates internally within the device, enabling call translation anywhere.

Samsung Electronics has not disclosed additional features of Galaxy AI yet. However, various speculation has emerged following the leak of the operating system expected to run on the Galaxy S24 series, “One UI 6.1.”

The Galaxy S24 is anticipated to feature a 150x zoom camera utilizing Galaxy AI. AI is expected to enhance image quality through software-corrected digital zoom. This speculation is supported by a teaser video on the US Samsung website containing the phrase, “Zoom with Galaxy AI is coming.”

Galaxy AI is also expected to be used in photo and video editing features. It will automatically fill in the background of photos, allowing for the expansion of photo edges beyond the original or moving the subject to a different position in the photo naturally. Other anticipated features include AI-generated wallpapers, auto-completion of bullet points in notes, and battery life management.

Samsung Electronics aims to lead the AI phone market with the Galaxy S24. The company is fully prepared, from the application processor (AP), which is the brain of the smartphone, to the AI model that determines AI performance.

Depending on the model and release region, the AP will combine Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Samsung Electronics’ Exynos 2400. Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is Qualcomm’s first chip designed specifically for generative AI. Exynos 2400 boasts a 1.7 times improvement in central processing unit (CPU) performance and a 15 times enhancement in AI performance compared to its predecessor. The return of Exynos to the Galaxy S series after two years is seen as a sign of Samsung Electronics’ confidence.
