Hyundai Steel has lost a prevailing wage lawsuit against its workers. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of workers in the Hyundai Steel normal wage case on Jan. 11, following the first and second trials.

In May 2013, the Hyundai Steel workers filed a lawsuit against the management, claiming that regular bonuses should be included in their regular wages, which the Supreme Court recognized after about 11 years. According to the ruling, Hyundai Steel will have to pay a total of 78 billion won (US$59 million) to the workers.

In addition to this case, the second and third lawsuits have been filed. In November of 2023, Hyundai Steel disclosed that it set aside about 380 billion won as a provision for litigation.

“The management must pay the money resulting from the judgment without delay,” the labor union said. “Otherwise, we will immediately initiate legal action to obtain the money from the management.”
