Samsung C&T is joining hands with multinational corporations to participate in Oman’s large-scale green ammonia project.

On Dec. 13, the construction division of Samsung C&T announced that it has formed a consortium with Japan’s Marubeni, Oman’s state-owned energy company OQ, and UAE’s Dutco, among other global companies, to secure the business rights for the Salalah H2 Green Ammonia Project. This project in Oman aims to produce 1 million tons of green ammonia annually.

On Dec. 12 (local time), the Samsung C&T consortium signed a land use and business development agreement for the Salalah Green Ammonia Project with Hydrom, a company established by the Omani government to grow the green hydrogen business.

Oman is promoting its business by selecting three green hydrogen zones in the central and southern regions that are suitable for the production of eco-friendly energy. Following the selection of a project developer for the first phase in the Duqm region earlier this year, the government is now selecting operators for green hydrogen and ammonia projects in the second phase in the Salalah region.

The multinational corporation consortium, including Samsung C&T, has received exclusive business rights from the Omani government for its competence in the global market in the renewable energy and clean energy businesses, including green hydrogen and ammonia. This direct award without competitive bidding promises high business performance and rapid project advancement.

The Salalah Green Ammonia Project, for which the Samsung C&T consortium has secured rights, is a project to produce 1 million tons of green ammonia annually in the Salalah Free Trade Zone, a southern port city of Oman. It involves establishing large-scale renewable energy power plants, including solar and wind, and utilizing an ammonia plant owned by OQ to produce green ammonia.

Starting with this agreement, the project plans to begin construction in 2027 after preliminary surveys and basic design, aiming to start production from 2030. The produced green ammonia will be exported to global markets, including Korea and Japan, for use in carbon-free clean energy power generation.

Samsung C&T’s construction division is focusing on green hydrogen and ammonia as the core of its eco-friendly energy business, advancing green hydrogen and ammonia production projects in global markets, including Australia and the Middle East regions like Saudi Arabia.
