It has been revealed that HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering is poised for a large-scale order at the end of the year. Depending on the production of eco-friendly vessels, the potential order size is expected to exceed 1 trillion won.

According to the shipbuilding industry on Nov. 30, it has been reported that CMA CGM, the world’s third-largest shipping company headquartered in France, has made inquiries about ordering 10 container ships with a capacity of 4,000 TEU each, reaching out to both a Chinese shipbuilder and Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in South Korea.

The vessels that CMA CGM is considering for the order are reported to be liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual-fuel propulsion ships with an estimated cost of around US$60 million per ship. If they are to be constructed as LNG-dedicated propulsion ships, the cost per vessel is expected to rise to around US$80 million. When converted to Korean won, this translates to a minimum of approximately 77.5 billion won to a maximum of around 103.3 billion won per ship.

Additionally, CMA CGM has expressed its desire to take delivery of the ordered ships by the end of 2026 at the latest.

If this order materializes, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering is anticipated to announce a significant year-end order of around 1 trillion won. In particular, there is a heightened possibility that the vessels will be constructed as eco-friendly ships, given the strengthened environmental regulations by the International Maritime Organization.
